Build self confidence and self esteem

Self-confidence and self esteem are the root of success and happiness. They determine how you interact with yourself and others, what you believe you are capable of and how you see yourself in the world. Confidence and esteem come from your inner core and can be likened to your 'foundations'. When your foundations are strong they can support whatever you choose to build and develop upon them.

With solid foundations, there are no limits to how high you can go and what you can achieve. When you have inner confidence you are free to create the life, the career and the relationships that you really want and they can strenghten and blossom.

What is self esteem?

Self-esteem is the overall quality of how one thinks about oneself. When one has high self esteem, one respects herself and considers her self-worth high. When one has low self esteem one does not respect oneself and considers her self-worth low.

What is self-confidence?

There are two types of self confidence – self-confidence that comes from knowing a particular task well and an overall self-confidence that comes from knowing oneself well.

Self-confidence is a feeling of trust in one's abilities, qualities, and judgment. It is the knowledge that you can do something and you can do it well. A person with self-confidence knows their strengths and their weaknesses, can apply their skills to any situation and adapt quickly as the situation unfolds.

A person with low self-confidence will avoid risk as they doubt their abilities, qualities and judgements. They will choose familiar situations, relationships and employment even if they are not happy as change can be too daunting.

Can you have one without the other?

Yes, self-confidence and self-esteem are not the same thing and you can have one without the other.

One can have high self esteem and yet lack self-confidence in a particular area, for example, singing in public or making a speech.

It is possible to have high self confidence in a task that you know well at work and yet your low self esteem means that you do not have enough self-discipline, self-belief or self-respect to make a personal goal a reality, for example losing weight or starting to date again after a divorce.
